Quotable Quote: "The renaissance of appreciation begins when what is taken for granted is no longer granted."

April 1: (Monday) Weather: 30's in the morning - snow showers/rain in the afternoon...

Dreary and Dark - what else can I say?

April 3: (Wednesday) Weather: Sunny but windy...

MOUNTAIN TRIVIA
WEEK # 11
WHERE ARE WE???

Trivia Clue: October's Off-The-Mountain News mentions it....

If you look under the menu at the top of this page 'Just For Fun' you'll see the Internet Scavenger Hunt.... Good Luck and I bet you get some competition with this one!

April 7: (Sunday) Weather: Windy and cold ...

The Tannahill Weavers (Scottish Band) are playing at the Rialto Theatre in Lancaster Tuesday evening....and even tho they really aren't Celtic, they play the Irish Flute and the Bagpipes and supposedly put on a good show.

Had breakfast at The Spa with Mike (VT) and his friends, Jack & Dorothy from Wallingford, CT ....and I've definitely decided that CT has more awesome people per capita than any other state in the union..... and don't go twisting that around Hydiseka/Mrs. Hood.... You guys know I love ya!....It's just that you're the only ones from Pennsylvania....

I also got a call Saturday night from Leon in VT saying how he's read Off-The-Mountain News for a long time (way back when it was 'Mountain News') and he loves it!.... Thanks, Leon, for the kind words and I'm holding you to that VT Maple Syrup....Ha!

I'm now down to two nights a week at The Pub so I'm mass producing cribbage boards (made two last week...Ha) and thought I'd start tying some flies again....not really cash-producing endeavors but it'll keep me occupied 'til the snow is out of the woods.

....and last, but not least.... Ron from Barnstead, NH is the first winner of the Internet Scavenger Hunt with all 10 correct answers.... YEAH!

April 8: (Monday) Weather: Light rain showers in the am......

Home Depot is coming up from 'down below' to measure Apt. 5 for the new carpeting throughout....so it looks like that will be the excitement for this drizzly & dark Monday....

April 10: (Wednesday) Weather: Rain showers in the am......mostly cloudy

Went to John and Linda's in Berlin overnight and had a great time as usual... Tuesday evening they treated me out to another night at Chang Thai's in Littleton. Greg Goodwin (keyboard), Rick Irwin (drums), and Bob Purrington (Bass Guitar) were playing again and were supurb!

Whoops - Sorry the 'Trivia' is late this week......

MOUNTAIN TRIVIA - WEEK # 12

April 11: (Thursday) Weather: Despite what Accuweather says, there's a bright, blue sky out there!...First one we've seen in several days!

Holy Moly....just found out that there are NO more nights at The Pub.... so...........so much for working this weekend.

I'll be taking a cup to Monument Square in Portland Maine to join the rest of the unemployed....Ha! ....Maybe I can even get a space under the million dollar bridge on Commercial Street?

April 12: (Friday) Weather: Cloudy with snow squalls....

MOUNTAIN TRIVIA - WEEK # 13

April 22: (Monday) Weather: Highs in the 40's today....somewhat windy....

Working on cribbage boards and managed to sell some of my stuff over the last week....

Found out that the campground is opening May 10th and I'll be starting on the 24th.... I've been making several trips back and forth, checking for 'Ice-Out' in the parking lot. Still quite a bit of snow up there and I took photos of the flooding, especially of Indian Stream, Perry Stream and the Connecticut River Valley.

MOUNTAIN TRIVIA - WEEK # 14

April 25: (Thursday) Weather: Rain in the am.... some sun in the afternoon....

Went up to Deer Mountain to check on the snow-in-the-woods situation and got my little Honda stuck in about 2-1/2 feet of snow.

Saw SEVEN moose - all live ones, of course....

... the first two were twin calves (alone) coming up from the Camp Otter Trail near the dip heading up to the Magalloway Road. The second was a bull just before Big Brook - third was a young moose by Johnson Spring and then nothing more until the trip back....

.....Just over the hill, south of the Magalloway Road, the twins were in the road trying to get hit and on the opposite side of the road was another set of eyes. This turned out to be a big, rackless Bull Moose and the last two (cow and calf) that I saw were by the Arctic Cat Dealer in the Philbrook Town Park. Plus a fox by the Round Pond Road. Not too shabby for an April evening, huh?

April 26: (Friday) Weather: Mixture of sun and clouds....60's...

May 3: (Friday) Weather: Sunny and incredibly warm.....Yeah

I know I'm on the black list right now....whoops! But everything has been so crazy....it's a countdown to cabin days and trying to reroute trails....and Lisa's moving to Georgia, despite her mother's whining....

New Trivia is up....good luck!

MOUNTAIN TRIVIA - WEEK # 15

I will list last weeks winners when I get out of the woods tonight....see ya!

May 5: (Sunday) Weather: Sunny and warm.....

The whole week has been extremely busy with all sorts of exciting things happening....spent every day in the woods and even though I've got tons of photos....there isn't enough time in the day to download them ---- so I'll just give you a recap of the week.....

Tuesday or Wednesday, I ran across large canine tracks in the Coon brook area of Camp Otter....In the same batch of mud, was a very large cat track so I got my 'track-lifting' paraphenalia and poured out the plaster of paris....both tracks came out good.

Friday, I found myself in a swamp which doubled as a moose graveyard (complete with tombstones....Ha ((Who Shot JR????))).... There were bones from at least three different moose-- but not a skull in sight. Also in this same swamp, were two giant, extremely fresh piles of bear scat. Even though I had my gun, I really wasn't up to disturbing Mama and her cubs coming out of hibernation.... so I grabbed the jaw and clavicles of two moose and got out of there....

Finished the Camp Otter bypass, loosing skin on my face to blackberry bushes that were taller than I.... did a preliminary 'sweep' of Deer Mountain ---tacked up fallen signs and picked up cigarette butt after cigarette butt..... and closed up doors and windows that had blown open over the winter....

Discovered that the bridge over Coon Brook has washed downriver on one end....and the bridge is approximately 40 feet long and double-wide for snowmobiles.... That's one bridge that I won't be cranking upriver by a come-along....Ha!

Hope everyone is enjoying the balmy weather....I know I am!

Ice is out on Back Lake and Lake Francis and 1st Lake is well on it's way.... Roads are still gated and East Inlet is gated at the bridge....so No Scott bog or East Inlet at all right now. The weather has been so dry that the roads are losing their mud making ingredients fast. If this keeps up, then I bet the roads will be open in another week or two, well before Memorial Weekend.

Lots of shed hunters are out....and on the way back from Gorham last evening, I saw about 8 of the shed-makers along Rt. 16 from 13-mile woods to Dixville Notch. One was even enjoying the Flume picnic area when I pulled in well after dark.

MOUNTAIN TRIVIA - WEEK # 16

May 10: (Friday) Weather: Rainy and warm.....

Everything is greening up nice and the leaves are out on the trees again....and there are a few tent campers at Lake Francis....

I'm working a few hours at Deer Mtn. now, getting things ready for Memorial Weekend....

CLNA (Connecticut Lakes Natural Area) meeting tomorrow morning at the Pittsburg Fire Station.....10:00am

MOUNTAIN TRIVIA - WEEK # 17

May 15: (Wednesday) Weather: Sunny and cool.....

Been working at the campground putting up signs and setting up the store.... and this month is flying by..... hope the summer doesn't go this fast!
